Outsmart grid limitations with BESS
The electrical grid in the Netherlands has reached its maximum limitations in major parts of the country.
Net-operators were in a race with time to increase the grid capacity, in order to cope with expected increases in energy demand and renewable energy production. Significant efforts have been made, such as increased transmission lines, additional transformers- and substations.
However, these work have failed to align with significant advancements in large scale solar- and wind projects, which took advantage of the SDE++ incentive. This resulted in reaching the point where further expansion in renewable projects have forced the grid to reach its maximum limits, thus also placing a risk on its stability.
As a result of this congestion constraint, many PV solar projects, new building projects and other kind of company expansions requiring more electrical power (new machines, EV-trucks- and buses) are currently on hold. Moreover, due to the imposed clipping of new PV-solar power plants the ROI/pay-back time in cases doubles.
The best solution for a stressed power grid is a smart BESS
Battery Energy Storage Systems can maintain a balance between supply and demand by storing excess electricity and releasing it when the demand or price is high, depending on the selected dispatch setting.
A newly designed PV-solar power plant in a power grid situation that does not allow power injection, will either need to be downsized from the start or the investor / owner needs to accepts (high) clipping losses.
The financial (negative) impact of clipping on the PV-solar business case can be turned around by applying a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) combined with an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS).
Such a solution will lower the clipping losses, increase the self consumption level and improve the business case.
