SOLSHARE OFFERS BESS SIZING BASED ON ACTUAL LOADS
Is a 15 minutes time-interval load profile appropriate for sizing BESS?!
The short answer is, it depends. A 15 minutes time-interval load profile is suitable to size a battery energy storage system (BESS) for applications like self-consumption, energy arbitrage and peak-shaving related to savings in annual & monthly demand charges / grid connection costs (kW peaks).
Other applications like physical peak-shaving (V), backup (UPS), off-grid and microgrid may require to zoom into the load profile in a shorter time resolution. At least for one minute. In that case, the minimum, average and maximum values for power in Watt can be quantified per minute level per phase (L1, L2, L3) and in total. Advanced meters can measure around 200 samples per selected time interval, then record the minimum, maximum and average power readings for each time interval. Those can later be exported to a spreadsheet or database for further analysis, or to be used in modeling and simulation software tools.
- Physical-peak-shaving can be applied due to grid connection capacity constraints, which is more and more the case in the Netherlands. Physical peak shaving can also be applied to lower the grid connection capacity and according costs. Click here for more information about peakshaving.

Solshare provides reliable power measurement services for all industry types. We use the top of the line electrical testing equipment in the global market, the Fluke 435 power quality analyzers.
This high grade equipment combined with the Fluke Loggers are applied to study your load profile, in as short as a fraction of second time-intervals, if needed. This will help to quantify power demand and energy usage even in transients events.
A load study will also aid in quantifying available reserve capacity in a grid connection and an existing LV switchgear, before adding a new electrical load to it. In some cases, load profile studies can help identify where savings are possible.
Power quality according to EN50160
Besides power and energy measurements, Solshare can investigate whether the quality of supplied power is within acceptable limits, as set by the standard EN50160. For instance, whether voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) is ≤5% and whether phases are well-balanced.
Namely, each phase voltage should not differ more than 1% from the average of the three phases, and unbalanced current should not exceed 10% of the average current. Phase balancing can be obtained either by redistributing single phase loads evenly among the three phases, or by means of active phase balancing equipment.
These kind of measures will optimize the use of the grid connection to its extent, and avoid the need to upgrade the grid connection in some cases. It can be considered a form of peak-shaving without integrating a BESS. Unbalanced systems may result in reduced efficiency, tripped circuit breakers, and a reduction in the lifetime of equipment. Phase balancing will create extra room for adding new loads and enables efficient and fast charging for electric vehicles.
